One Walk at a Time
One Walk at a Time: An Invitation to Slow Down and See
There is a point when photography becomes less about making a photograph and more about learning to see.
That idea is at the heart of my new book, One Walk at a Time.
I created this book for photographers who want to slow down, step outside, and rediscover the simple pleasure of looking closely at the world around them. You don't need an expensive camera. You don't need to travel somewhere extraordinary. You don't even need a particular destination.
You just need to walk.
Follow Your Curiosity
Over the years, I've learned that some of the best photographs aren't found by searching for something spectacular. They're found when we slow down enough to notice what was already there.
A patch of light.
The texture of an old building.
A tree that has weathered another season.
A reflection.
A small detail that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The ordinary has been waiting for someone to notice.
One Walk at a Time grew from that idea.
The book contains twenty-three photo walks, each offering a different way to explore, observe, and make photographs. They aren't assignments you have to complete perfectly. They're invitations to look differently.
And there is no right way to do them.
Use a camera. Use your phone. Walk for an hour or wander for ten minutes. Follow the suggestions exactly, or let them lead you somewhere completely unexpected.
The point isn't to check something off a list.
The point is to see.
Making a Photograph
I intentionally use the words make a photograph rather than take a photograph.
There is something important in that distinction.
Making suggests intention. It asks us to participate in the moment rather than simply record it.
Photography can become a way of paying attention.
When we slow down, we begin to notice how light changes across a familiar place. We see patterns, textures, shadows, movement, and small details that we might normally walk right past.
Sometimes we discover something beautiful.
Sometimes we discover something surprising.
And sometimes we discover that the place we've walked past a hundred times has been telling us a story all along.
Don't Forget to Breathe
One of the things I hope readers take away from this book has very little to do with photography.
Don't forget to breathe.
Put the camera down occasionally.
Look around.
Listen.
Notice where time has left its signature.
Let yourself wander without knowing exactly what you're looking for.
That's where curiosity begins.
One Walk at a Time
You can work through the walks once a week, one each day, or whenever you need a reason to get outside.
There is no finish line.
The walks are simply a way to begin.
My hope is that One Walk at a Time becomes more than a photography book. I hope it becomes a companion—a small reminder to slow down, look closer, and follow your curiosity.
Because sometimes the photograph you're looking for isn't somewhere far away.
Sometimes it's waiting just around the corner.
One walk at a time.
